Keraranto

It was a beautiful spring day in the Laborastory's forest.  The sun was shining, the birds were singing, the flowers were blooming.  But to Professor Electra, it might as well have been midnight in the middle of winter with wolves howling in the darkness and icicles hanging from every tree.  He sat alone in the middle of a pile of wood chips, his purple head hanging in his bright green claws.  His lab notebook was open beside him.  The page looked like this:

Each requirement had a bright red check mark beside it, so why was the Professor so sad?  Because on closer examination of the doodle, he realized that Keraranto had no mouth!  "What to doodle-do," he moaned.  "No matter how finely I grind the twigs, or how lightly Chef Poire whips the eggs, there is no way for this Morphadoodle to eat, and no one, not even a Morphadoodle, can survive without eating.  Oh where is the solution?"

"Why, right in front of your protruding peepers, my friend," said Dr. Stalk who had materialized in the blink of an eye.  He reached into his lab coat pocket and pulled out a magnifying glass.  "Look there, in the waters of our magical bog, and you will see an organism that will help with the design of Keraranto."  Electra looked once more at the doodle, then crab-walked over to the bog's edge.  He bent his eyestalks over the glass, peered closely in the water, and nodded when he saw the miniscule creature.  "It's called the amoeba proteus," continued the Doctor.  "It is a one CELL organism.  It has no mouth.  Watch how it changes its shape to surround its food."  As if by magic, the tiny creature began to elongate its "body" - stretching out two "arms" on either side of its "lunch", like two rays shooting from the sun.  Electra gasped as the tips of the rays moved toward each other then pressed together to make a wall from which there was no escape.  Electra's eyes lit up.  "Brilliant!" he gasped.  "Now Keraranto can be morphed and survive!"  Dr. Stalk nodded.  "The only drawback is that until Keraranto learns to control this power, anyone who tries to hug him might be squashed into mush."  "Not to worry," answered Electra.  "Part of his doodle data said that Keraranto would have no friends."

"No friends?  No friends?"  Dr. Stalk was stunned.  "But he is such a happy fellow.  Many Morphadoodles will want to know him.  Give me a moment to ponder this problem."  He closed his giant eye and rubbed his head with his leafy hand.  The air around him grew still.  All sounds of the forest stopped.  And then, in the distance, a telephone rang. Stalk's eye popped open.  "That's it!" he exclaimed.  "Keraranto will communicate by telephone- not just any telephone- a CELL phone!"

"Yes!"  shouted his purple partner, "and to keep everyone LONG DISTANCE, his number will be 239-273-6363 (BEW-ARE-OFME)!!"
