Rainbow Rosie

Rainbow Rosie to the Rescue

The bright Miami sky was as blue as a robin's egg on the day that the invitation arrived.  Rainbow Rosie and her faithful dog, Rainbow Rover, were returning from a walk along the shore.  "Just in time to get the mail," said Rosie, whose hands were filled with brightly colored beach glass.  "Rover, would you be so kind?"  Rover, who had been dragging an enormous stick, as any dog anywhere will do, reluctantly released it, stood up on his hind legs, and gently pulled the letters into his mouth.  One envelope in particular grabbed Rosie's attention.  This is what it looked like:

"It's from the Lab," she said, her eyes shining.  "It must be my invitation to the Annual Morphadoodle Unusual Hat Party.  Do you remember the fun we had last year?"  Rover smiled and nodded, careful not to drop his precious parcel.  I can still taste those rainbow popsicles with the ice cream inside- bursts of color that tickled me pink!"  Rosie began to run, "And that football game with eight-armed Greenny as the quarterback and the super fast, super flying Yoyodoodle as his star receiver- wasn't it amazing?  I never saw anyone throw so many touchdown passes at the same time."  The more excited Rosie became, the more colors flashed through her hair, leaving a streak rainbow trail for Rover to follow.

"I'll need my magic handbag filled with my magic lipstick, my guitar, you, dear Rover, and, of course, an unusual hat."  Rover scampered about the room retrieving everything, while Rosie fashioned a sand sculpture to look like the Laborastory's magnificent oak tree.  She decorated it with shells and colorful pieces of beach glass, smiled at her reflection in the mirror, and, with her trusted dog beside her, took off into the wild blue yonder.

Everyone was at the party.  Heartalina, in from Australia, balanced a didgeridoo on her head.  Ashley, fresh from the Milky Way, wore a moon dust and crystal tiara.  Greenny, of course, had his usual dilemma.  Each of his arms held a different hat, and he couldn't decide which one to choose, so he kept switching them- so quickly that he no longer looked like a morphadoodle.  He looked like a wild green windmill!  And Keraronto, oh Keraronto didn't wear anything on his head because he really didn't have one, and it was hard to decide where a hat could go.  This made him sad, and he hid in the wood chips apart from all the others.

When Rainbow Rosie appeared, everyone cheered.  Always happy and ready for fun, she could bring color to the greyest sky, but on this red letter day, she simply beamed.  She danced in the air with Mr. Puff Puff, and changed her hair color to match whatever objects he was juggling: red apples (NEVER red tomatoes), orange oranges, yellow lemons (NEVER yellow bananas), green avocados, blueberries, and purple grapes.

The sky was ablaze with color when Rosie and Mr. Puff Puff straightened their hats and settled back to the ground.  She should have been thrilled with her performance, but there was a tiny black cloud hanging over her head.  Where was Keraronto?  She asked everyone, but no one knew, and as the party went on, her black cloud grew darker.  And then Rainbow Rover did something that all dogs everywhere love to do.  He sniffed and he sniffed and he sniffed, and he followed the scent in his nose until it brought him to a pile of wood chips.  With his tail wagging, Rainbow Rover bowed his head, gently picked up Keraronto, and carried the squirming morphadoodle to Rainbow Rosie.

When she saw him, the black cloud turned golden.  "Why are you not at the party?" she asked as she hugged her long lost friend.  Reluctantly, he answered.  "Where am I supposed to put a hat?  I don't really have a head.,"  Rainbow Rosie sat between her dog and Keraranto and began to think.  After a moment, she reached into her magic handbag, pulled out her magic lipstick and began to apply different colors to each of Keraronto's spikes.  Then she took out a looking glass so he could see his reflection.

"I'm certainly more colorful, but I still don't know where a hat could go," he said.  "Oh Keraranto," laughed Rosie, "You're not going to wear a hat.  You're going to be a hat- a fabulous hat for Rainbow Rover."  She laid him gently atop her dog's head, and the three of them returned to the party.

When it was time to judge the most unusual hat at this year's Annual Morphadoodle Unusual Hat Party, can you guess who won?
