Fuzzy

Professor Electra scuttled as fast as his stubby purple legs would carry him, his ever-present camera bouncing against his chest with each step. He was clutching the furry pink paw of his new Morphadoodle friend who struggled to keep up with his excited pace. "We're almost there," he gasped. "Keep your eyes open for a tree with the most colorful leaves you've ever seen." His pink companion had a serious expression on her sweet face. "But will we make it before dark?" she asked, "Because I don't like the dark."
It had been a long day for Fuzzy, and all she wanted to do was curl up with her favorite book, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic and a square of chocolate as she was in full agreement with Mrs. Piggle Wiggle- "There's nothing as cozy as a piece of candy and a book." She could feel her book bouncing around in her backpack along with her candy stash and other hidden essentials.
Electra could barely contain his excitement when he stopped in front of a tree whose branches were bending from the weight of its polka dot leaves. Fuzzy knelt down to pick up a bright green leaf with purple dots that had fallen and carefully hid it in the side pocket of her backpack as she watched Electra drop an acorn into the keyhole that had been carved into the tree's mighty trunk.
The door swung open, and with a majestic sweep of his arm, Professor Electra invited Fuzzy to enter. "My dear friend, welcome to The Leaf-Through Library, home to the collection of the Morphadoodles' favorite books." He smiled proudly. "We have quite an assortment, all arranged according to the categories of the Morphadoodle-Dewey System. You'll find a bit of everything here- books that will inspire you to laugh out loud, recite a poem, solve a mystery, paint a picture, conduct an experiment...even travel through time."
Fuzzy was speechless. She could not believe her good fortune. As she surveyed the room with shelves full of page-turners, she imagined herself curled up in a corner, secret stash of sweets at her side, allowing a book to carry her effortlessly from one exciting place to another, almost living between the pages.
"Shall we look for a book, Fuzzy?" asked Professor Electra. "What will it be?" Fuzzy thought for a moment and said, "Well, I'd like to find a book about a rabbit to read to my pet bunny, Fuzzy 2. Where would I find one?"
"Hmm...let me see...In our Morphadoodle-Dewey Catalogue it seems we have some book recommendations from Nibblet, Egg-Berto the Magnificent's pet rabbit." Fuzzy followed Professor Electra's bobbing eye stalks through the stacks to a low shelf in the corner. He look confused. "How odd! It seems that all the books about squirrels and rabbits are out of order. Oh my! The pages are dog-eared...and what kind of bookmark is THIS?" Fuzzy turned it over in her paw studying it carefully, and took a good long sniff. "I believe it's a dog biscuit, sir."
"A dog biscuit?" a voice asked. Surprised, Professor Electra and Fuzzy turned around to see Miss Princess at the end of the long row of books, her bright yellow cape streaming behind her. "May I see the new evidence?" she asked ever so politely. "There have been some strange happenings at The Leaf-Through Library recently. On my last visit, I noticed that books on the lower shelves were in total disarray, cushions had been removed from chairs, and when I arrived home to read Traction Man Meets Turbo Dog, the front cover was suspiciously wet, and there were teeth marks on the binding. After further investigation, I learned that there have been a number of missing items reported. Puffles' wand and Egg-Burto's handkerchief both vanished into thin air. Berralina's right boot wandered off, and worst of all, something bit off Cook E. Monster's left leg. It was a terrible nuisance as he was in the midst of training for a race, but luckily Chef Poire was able to whip him up a new one."
Professor Electra was deep in thought. After a moment he asked, "Do you have any theories as to whom or what has been creating this chaos?"
"Well," replied Miss Princess, "I have already ruled out a haunting by Ghost with Hair, a plundering mission by Captain Potato, and general mischief by Deedle Dum. My last thought was that Owen was responsible for Cook E. Monster's missing leg. It's no secret that he has a biting problem. But I'm back to square one. Quite honestly, Professor, I'm stumped."
"Excuse me," Fuzzy interrupted, "but have you asked the dog if she has any information?"
"Dog?" asked Miss Princess. "What dog?" asked Professor Electra.
"Why the dog under the front desk reading Bad Kitty Gets a Bath. It's one of my favorites. She has an unusually long pink tongue, and she is wearing a bright red raincoat. She seems friendly enough. Look. Her tail is wagging so quickly that she just knocked a row of books off the reference shelf. Maybe she knows something."
The trio quietly approached the desk and peered underneath. Electra and Miss Princess could not believe their eyes. "It's a nest," whispered Miss Princess. Electra shook his head in disagreement. "No, I think it's more like a den." Beneath the desk was a small enclosed space filled with findings of all shapes and sizes. Cushions were surrounded by piles of books, a collection of sticks, one slightly chewed purple boot, a wand with no star, a crumpled handkerchief with a monogrammed "E", and a scattering of Cook E. crumbs. And there, in the center of it all was a brown furry dog with her nose buried in a book. She looked up and said, "I'm Elizabeth Barrett Barking, a Morphazoodle dog known for my extraordinary reading ability and treasure-hunting skills, and now I have decided to be The Leaf-Through Library's new librarian. How may I help you?"
Professor Electra and Miss Princess looked at each other in amazement. "When did this happen?" Miss Princess asked Electra. "I don't recall seeing a job opening posted in The Morphadoodle Times," murmured Electra deep in thought. While the two astonished Morphadoodles tried to make sense of the news, Fuzzy and Elizabeth began their first of many book discussions. Elizabeth, known as Lizzie to her friends, read aloud from another one of her favorites while Fuzzy searched her backpack for some candy to share with her new friend. "Does Dr. Stalk know about this new development?" Electra wondered out loud. Electra then took the lens cap off of his camera and took a picture of the furry friends to document this special day...and to prove to Dr. Stalk that Lizzie was not a figment of his imagination.
