Goo Goo and Sun Smile

Goo Goo let out a tremendous super giggle as he poked his head out from his orange box.  Being just a little bit afraid of the dark, Goo Goo preferred to stay within the comfort of his four orange walls until his friend Sun Smile was shining high in the bright blue sky.  Sun Smile's happy face always gave the goofy turquoise Morphadoodle a case of the giggles. He didn't mind though because it was a great way to start his day.

Lily liked to start her day that way, too, waiting for Sun Smile to fly into view.  Lily was Goo Goo's sister.  She lived in an orange box right next to his.  Sun Smile liked to watch the pair playing hide and seek or tossing giant dinosaur bones to Goo Goo's pet, Dogmonster.  Dogmonster was an expert fetcher.  Whenever Goo Goo and his friends were playing ball and one of the balls was knocked out of the park, Dogmonster would bound off and bring it back.  Of course it was a little wet and a little chewed, but a dog's gotta do what a dog's gotta do.

"Good morning, Sun Smile," shouted Goo Goo in a voice loud enough so that his stellar friend could hear him even though he had his i-pod turned on, "I could hardly wait for you to get here."  Goo Goo plunked his lucky hat on his head and popped out of his "house" like a jack in the box.   "I would never be late for a day like this, Goo Goo," said Sun Smile warmly.  "I had to wait for Sunscreen to finish one of his doggie dreams before I woke him up."  With that, Sunscreen, who had been hiding behind his master, began to wag his tail so enthusiastically that he swished the beginnings of a cloud out of the sky.  Goo Goo giggled and Dogmonster barked such a loud "hooray" at the sight of his friend that they woke little Lily up.  "Just give me a minute to find my lucky hat, "she told her brother and his friend.

"Isn't it the most perfect day, Sun Smile?" she asked as she lifted a large picnic basket out of her "house".  "No sign of rain, no chill in the air, and no monsters anywhere."  Sun Smile swooped down and hovered over the basket.  "Dare I ask if there are the makings of hamburgers and french fries inside?" Lily smiled.  "Of course there are," she answered, "and chicken fingers for my big brother!" Sun Smile beamed.  "Once we get to the Fair we'll need a couple of your rays to start up our charcoal, and we'll have a lunch fit for two kings, one queen, and two canines."

In the distance Horatio crowed, "Morphadoodle-doo, Morphadoodle-doo!  If you're coming to the Fair I'm crowing for YOU!"  Dogmonster's ears pricked up.  Sunscreen's tail began to beat like a furry, flashing metronome.  Goo Goo and Lily grasped the handles of the picnic basket, and Sun Smile raised his flag.  "Move forward, foursome!" he called from his airy height.  "It's time to follow the Acorn Trail and enter the Laborastory Forest."  Goo Goo hesitated.  "You know, sometimes it can get dark in there with all the trees and all the leaves."  "Not to worry, my friend,"assured Sun Smile, "I'll be right above you, and if I have to, I'll just turn on my high beams."  True to his word, Sun Smile lit the way.

At the Fair there was so much to do.  Sun Smile flew down to Horatio's arts and crafts table and fashioned another flag for himself - this time, out of moonbeams.  Lily had her face painted with butterfly dust by Mr. Anthony.  Sunscreen and Dogmonster met their friends Rainbow Rover and Lizzie at the mushroon obstacle course and chased each other round and round.  And Goo Goo, well Goo Goo headed straight to the Community Garden where Zoey had hung a giant tic tac toe board from the limb of an ancient tree.  Tic tac toe was this year's super contest with a grand prize wrapped inside a giant orange box, and Goo Goo wanted to WIN!  He didn't care what the mystery prize was; he wanted the box.  He had been growing a lot lately and could hardly roll over in his sleep in his current cardboard cubby.  But it wouldn't be easy.

There were several contestants.  Each one wore a number and held a giant piece of chalk to scratch on either an "x" or an "o".  At the end of every game, one Morphadoodle would be declared the winner and play against the next contestant.  In between each game, Egg-Burto the Magnificent would wave his wand, and the "x's" and "o's" would magically disappear.  All was going on as planned until there were only two contestants left: Goo Goo and Captain Potato, a dastardly pirate only competing to spoil someone else's fun.

"You really want that orange box, don't ya, matey?"  Goo Goo swallowed a giggle and stuttered, "Y-y-yes S-s-sir."

"Well, I'm gonna beat you, Mr. Goo Goo," snarled the snippy spud, "and when I win, you can watch me push that orange box off the gangplank where it will sink to the bottom of the sea.  And you'll thank your lucky stars that I didn't stuff you in it first!"  Goo Goo shuddered.  The crowd that had gathered to watch shuddered, too.  The final game began.

Captain Potato drew an "x" in the center box.  Goo Goo drew his "o" in the upper right corner.  Captain Potato drew an "x" to the right of center.  Goo Goo drew his "o" to the left.  Over and over they added their "x's" and "o's", each preventing the other from getting three in a row.  They had played four games with no one declared the winner.  Goo Goo had been concentrating so hard on the game that he didn't realize that it had gotten dark.

"We have time for one last game before the rising of the moon" declared Egg-Burto.  When Goo Goo looked up and saw the night sky, he began to get nervous and just a little bit scared.  "I can barely see the board," he whispered to Lily, who had been keeping his strength up with a steady supply of chicken fingers, "and it's my turn to start.  I've got to draw my "o" in the center square.  It's my only hope of winning, but I can't find it. It's too dark for me to see."

Captain Potato began to laugh. "Your turn is almost up Mr. Goo Goo.  If you can't put the first "o" on the board, you'll be disqualified and I'll win.  Ha! Ha! Ha!  I can't wait to see that box flop into the foam."

Goo Goo was heartsick and about to cry when a tiny light began to glow in front of the board.  "I won't let you lose, my friend," said Sun Smile.  "Even though it's night, I still have the power to shine a little light."  And shine he did.  A small flicker at first that grew and grew until the center square was lit up like a Christmas tree.  Goo Goo stepped forward and drew his "o".  When it was Captain Potato's turn, Sun Smile went out in a flash.  Captain Potato whirled around.  "Where are you, Sun Smile?  Show yourself!"  Sun Smile returned but this time only shining enough light to to illuminate a fistful of french fries that he held in his hand.  "Would you like to try a fry, Captain?  Or would you rather be one?"  Goo Goo giggled.  Captain Potato grew so angry that he snapped his chalk in half and stormed off into the night.  Goo Goo was declared the winner.  The crowd roared.

Inside the box was a set of trains.  Goo Goo liked that prize almost as much as he liked the container.  That night, Goo Goo, Sun Smile, Lily, Dogmonster, and Sunscreen all slept in the huge orange box together.  When night was done, Sun Smile slipped out through the lid and rose into the sky ready to brighten another day for Goo Goo the giggler and all of his friends.
