Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by Jen Corace

Pod's little peas LOVE this story about Little Pea the picky eater.  As we all know, little peas need to eat their candy if they want to grow to be healthy and strong, but Little Pea hates it all- swirly candy, striped candy, even rainbow candy.  But if he doesn't eat his candy, how will he ever get dessert?

Lizzie can't help herself from laughing out loud each time she reads this story.  Mr. Mutt has a newspaper column that has "expert answers for dogs with people problems".  Dogs from all over send him letters with their doggy problems like not being able to sleep on the people bed, being dressed up in undignified costumes, bland diets, and all sorts of outrageous things that humans do to poor dogs.  But Mr. Mutt has an enemy.  A cat named The Queen has been protesting his snide comments about cats and says she's coming for them.  Can Mr. Mutt's faithful followers rescue him and his advice column from the evil cat?

Painted Dreams by Karen Lynn Williams

Ti Marie is a young girl who wants to paint.  Her family lives in Haiti, and it isn't easy for her to find paper, paints, and free time.   The healer of her village paints beautiful and frightening pictures, and Ti Marie wants to paint like him.  She is resourceful and looks in places others wouldn't think of and makes her own art supplies. Ti Marie uses pieces of red brick, white stone, black charcoal, and bits of green moss.  Goat hairs and chicken feathers become her paint brushes.  Horatio is inspired by the way this young artist finds a way to create her art.

Sophie's Masterpiece by Eileen Spinelli

Puffles may be frightened of spiders, but Sophie is a spider that she would love to have for a friend.  In this heartfelt story, Sophie, a talented artist, leaves her home and sets out on her own and finds that not everyone likes spiders.  After being screamed at and being called ugly and hideous, her spirit and love of spinning are almost completely destroyed.  She has only tried to be helpful to people.  She spins slippers and curtains and no one appreciates her, until a young pregnant woman sees her and doesn't say a word.  She just smiles.  When Sophie realizes that the baby will need a soft blanket, she begins spinning.  "As she spun, new ideas came to her.  She worked them into the blanket...snippets of fragrant pine...wisps of night...old lullabies...playful snowflakes..."  Will she finish her spinning in time?  Will this be her masterpiece?

Elsie Piddock Skips in Her Sleep by Eleanor Farjeon

Heartalina loves this charming tale about Elsie Piddock who was the best rope-skipper in her village.  She was so great the fairies heard of her and brought her to their hilltop in the night to learn their special skipping styles.  There was...

     The High Skip,

The Sly Skip,

     The Skip Like a Feather,

The Long Skip

     The Strong Skip,

And the Skip All Together!

     The Slow Skip,

The Toe Skip,

     The Skip Double-Double,

The Fast Skip

     The Last Skip,

And the Skip Against Trouble!

They were so impressed with her talent they gave her everlasting candy on the end of the skipping rope and she became a legend.
